National Service in the Army

Club member John Rich, in an entertaining talk at the previous meeting, spoke of his National Service years between 1952 and ’54. He joined the REME in Blandford, Dorset and after the initial six weeks of square-bashing, he decided to do his trade training as a vehicle mechanic.

On passing his 16 weeks vehicle course, he was posted to Egypt where his job was to examine lorry beds that had been repaired by Egyptian and Mauritian mechanics. He was then transferred to the instrument shop and later went on to testing and checking weighing machines.

John said a memorable occasion was June 2, 1953, Coronation day, when they had a large parade followed by a lunch served by the officers.
